Prerequisite Courses
- ENG 101 - Writing 1, and ENG 201 - Advanced Writing 1, or ENG 102 - Writing 2, as placed, unless exempted
- ENG 193 - Fundamentals of Journalism (Journalism I)
Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in order to qualify for and stay in the certificate program.
Students may take one of two tracks:
1. Certificate through the Departments of English and Media Study
Required Courses
- DMS 259 - Introduction to Media Analysis (4 cr)
- ENG 398 - Ethics in Journalism (3 cr)
- ENG 399 - Journalism II
- Two Internship Courses: Choose from ENG 395/396 - Writing Workshop, or ENG 496 - Writing Internship (6 credits)
- Electives (two courses): To be selected from the list below or in consultation with the program advisor.
- Recommended electives: New Journalism, Literary Journalism, Social Web Media (DMS), Documentary Film (DMS), Advanced Writing Non-Fiction and appropriate courses in English, Media Study, Communication, or subject areas useful to journalism.

- Electives (two courses): to be selected from the list below or in consultation with the program advisor.
- Recommended electives: New Journalism, Literary Journalism, Social Web Media (DMS), Documentary Film (DMS) Advanced Writing Non-Fiction and appropriate courses in English, Media Study, Communication, or subject areas useful to journalism.

Students can find applications in Clemens 303. They should then schedule an appointment with the program director.
Note: The certificate is only awarded concurrently upon completion of a bachelor’s degree at the University at Buffalo.
